Summer packing for one bag

Summer travel rewards restraint. Lighter fabrics, fewer pieces, smaller volume. A 20-inch carry-on is usually enough for two weeks if the wardrobe is considered.

Summer travel rewards restraint. Lighter fabrics, fewer pieces, smaller volume. A 20-inch carry-on is usually enough for two weeks if the wardrobe is considered.

The principle.

Build the trip around three bottoms and five tops. Add two outerwear pieces, two pairs of shoes, swim, and underwear for one week. Everything else is variation.

The list.

  • Two pairs of light trousers or shorts.
  • One pair of denim, for cooler evenings and travel days.
  • Two cotton or linen short-sleeve shirts.
  • Two t-shirts.
  • One overshirt or button-down, for restaurants and air conditioning.
  • One light sweater or sun layer.
  • One swimsuit (worn under or rolled at the side of the case).
  • One pair of sandals or slip-ons.
  • One pair of sneakers (worn in transit).
  • Underwear and socks for one week.
  • Sunglasses, hat (worn in transit if rigid).

Toiletries change in summer.

SPF in 100 ml containers. Aloe in a small decant. A leave-in conditioner for after the pool. A second deodorant for evenings. The wet/dry pocket of the Lucent or Valence is the home for everything that could leak. A spilled SPF in a hardshell case is not the end of the trip if it never reaches the lining.

The swim system.

A wet swimsuit goes back into the wet/dry pocket after a beach day. The fabric drains, the rest of the case stays dry. Dedicate a small mesh pouch for damp items only.

What to leave home.

A second swimsuit, unless the destination is a pool-every-day trip. A second pair of jeans. The "rainy day" sweater for a forecast that says 85 degrees all week.

Doing laundry once mid-trip extends a 20-inch carry-on to a two-week wardrobe without forcing a checked bag. Most hotels and rentals can handle one cycle. Pack for that math.
