A warranty is a promise about how a brand intends to behave after the sale. The longer the warranty, the more the brand has to trust its build. Reading the fine print is the only way to know which warranty actually pays out.
The categories.
Lifetime limited warranty. Covers manufacturer defects in materials and workmanship for the lifetime of the product, with carve-outs. Most premium brands use this language.
Limited warranty for a set term. Five years, ten years. Covers defects within the period and then ends.
Functional warranty. Covers the parts that fail (wheels, handles, latches) but not cosmetic damage.
No published warranty. The brand handles complaints case by case.
What "limited" usually excludes.
- Cosmetic damage from baggage handlers and airlines.
- Damage from misuse (overpacking, improper storage, water immersion).
- Theft and loss.
- Liquid damage to interior linings.
- Repairs performed by a third party.
Brand-by-brand.
Portar. Lifetime limited warranty. Covers manufacturer defects in materials and workmanship. The brand handles repairs direct, including EdgeFrame closure parts, leather handles, locks, and wheels. Ships with free shipping, free returns, and a 100-day trial.
Away. Limited lifetime warranty on the hardside cases. Covers cracks, broken zippers, handles, and wheels. Cosmetic damage excluded.
Monos. Lifetime warranty on the hardside cases. Covers shell defects and hardware failures. 100-day trial.
Rimowa. Five-year warranty extended to lifetime through a paid program. Covers material and workmanship defects. Premium repair network with longer turnaround.
Tumi. Five-year warranty on most cases plus one year of "worry-free" coverage that handles any damage including cosmetic.
Travelpro. Lifetime warranty with separate "Trusted Companion" terms that cover airline-induced damage for the life of the product.
What to ask before you buy.
- How long does a repair take?
- Does the brand ship a replacement part to your address, or do you mail the case to a warehouse?
- What is the customer service response time?
- Does the warranty transfer with the case if it changes hands?
Direct repair from the brand is the single feature that compounds the most over a decade. A case that gets fixed in two weeks at home is a case that stays in service. A case that has to ship across the country is a case that ends up replaced.
Read the warranty before the trip. The right one is the difference between a long-haul case and a short one.
