Destination wedding packing: garments, gifts, and the kit that holds it all

A destination wedding asks the carry system to do more than usual. Formalwear that arrives uncreased. Gifts that travel safely. A swimsuit and the welcome-night outfit and the post-ceremony brunch outfit, in the right order, ready when they are needed.

A destination wedding asks the carry system to do more than usual. Formalwear that arrives uncreased. Gifts that travel safely. A swimsuit and the welcome-night outfit and the post-ceremony brunch outfit, in the right order, ready when they are needed.

The case.

A 28-inch check-in for the wedding party. A 20-inch carry-on for guests staying three or four nights. The Valence in either size handles the volume, and the EdgeFrame closure keeps the case sealed through baggage handling that may not be gentle.

The garment plan.

A suit jacket folds across the top of the case, lining out, lapels meeting at the center. A long dress folds in thirds along the length of the case and rests at the top of the lid. The Concord's top-opening layout is the cleanest choice for a one-suit, one-dress trip; the case stands upright and the formal items pull out flat.

Hang the formalwear on arrival. Hotel steam in the bathroom relaxes most creases in twenty minutes.

The guest list.

  • Welcome night: relaxed but considered.
  • Rehearsal or sunset event: smart casual.
  • Ceremony: formal.
  • Reception: same outfit unless the party calls for a change.
  • Brunch: comfortable.
  • Travel day home: easy.

Five outfits, four days, one case.

The gift question.

Wedding gifts ship to the venue when possible. They never travel in the case if they can avoid it. A small wrapped item that has to fly goes in the personal bag, padded with a sweater.

Toiletries and beauty.

A small kit with the essentials, plus one product for the day-of: a hair primer, a setting spray, an under-eye balm. Decant. The wet/dry pocket of the Lucent or Valence catches any leak before it reaches the dress.

Accessories.

Jewelry in a soft roll, inside the toiletry kit. Shoes in soft bags, at the bottom of the case near the wheels. Belt rolled inside a shoe.

What stays home.

The "in case it rains" backup outfit. The extra dress. The shoes you have not worn in a year. The wedding rewards a calm guest, and a calm guest packed light.
